North Yorkshire has many underrated staycation destinations. You've got a great mixture of seaside towns and, scattered rural timeless villages, ruins, rolling hills and the largest expanse of heather moorland in the UK. Here's a few we've handpicked as our top places to visit in North Yorkshire, but there's lots more!
Whitby
Visit Whitby and join the long running debate of where does the best fish and chips, you'll see queues coming out of Trenchers and Magpies along with many others. Weighing on the debate casting a vote for family favourite Trenchers. Climb the 199 steps and the English Heritage site; Whitby Abbey, spend some time on the beach, walk along the pier or visit the Dracula museum.
Goathland
Visit Aidensfield from Heartbeat, a classic British police drama, aka Goathland, or probably now more famed for its train station as it was used for the set of Hogsmeade in Harry Potter. An idyllic spot in the North Yorkshire Moors countryside with lots and lots of sheep.
Staithes
Narrow streets lined with higgledy-piggeldy cottages, walk down to the beach for a spot of fossil hunting if you can face the steep walk back up. Take the coastal cliff top walk up the top but stay away from the edge, whether you're above or below!
York
Visit one of the most historical city's in England, with Roman and Viking roots its steeped in history and its largely well preserved for everyone to see. Explore the Minster, Shambles, Yorvik, Castle and Railway Museum.
Hutton-le-Hole
A little village near Whitby, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It's more popular event, the village fete every year on May Bank holiday, usually coinciding with May half term. This includes a duck race. It is a prefect base to relax in and come home to after a days exploring around Whitby or from rambling though the moors.
Great Ayton and Newton under Roseberry
Either side of the county border find Great Ayton on the edge of North Yorkshire and Newton under Roseberry just over the border in Redcar&Cleveland. Hike up Roseberry Topping and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area opt to hike a longer circular loop to include the hills beyond.
Lealholm and Thorton-le-Dale
Both have claim to the title the Prettiest Village in Yorkshire' so we will let you decide which one you think comes out on top. Lots of walks pass through these small chocolate box villages, with small quaint tearooms and shops. The stepping stones in Lealholm are where generations of families in the area have spent their summers splashing in the water.
